7 fun things to do with your dog during the COVID-19 quarantine!

Here in Michigan, we have received word that our quarantine will be until April 30th. Now that’s going to be a long time! Fortunately, we’re at home with our pets, and our dogs are well equipped to keep us sane. Times may be tough, but it’s springtime, the weather’s nicer, and we all have a little cabin fever! We’ve built up a list of 7 fun things to do with your pooch!

1. Go for a walk (or run)

My dog, Cayley, has enjoyed napping all winter long. She’s napped on her bed, on my bed, on a chair, in the living room, and by the fire. So much napping that she’s actually gained a few too many pounds! As a 10 year old dog, I’m thoughtful of her health and there’s no better way to get her back in shape than a daily walk! The benefits of walking are huge too, just getting outside for a little bit everyday will leave both you and your pooch feeling refreshed and destressed!

2. Fetch!

So far this blog post is pretty basic, I mean playing fetch with Fido is one of the most common thoughts that pop up when you say dog! But seriously, getting outside and throwing the ol’ tennis ball around is a great way to have a little fun with your retriever (or hound, etc.). The only tough part is if your dog is like Cayley and likes to turn fetch into keep away…

3. Training opportunities

I know, I know, training? Really? But yes, training is a great way to spend time with your german shepherd or great dane. Get yourself a bag of treats, and work on that sit command! As your dog progresses, I recommend introducing stay, lie down, and if you can roll over. Shake is a great trick, but beware! When I taught Cayley, she figured out she could con a treat out of anyone with a cute look and a paw offered for shaking!

4. Dog baths

Yea we’re going there! Staying cooped up inside with your pooch is bound to lead to some close proximity smells. If your dog is active, or maybe just super happy to see you and drooling a bit, then they’re bound to develop a little bit of body odor. Well, thankfully quarantine has freed up plenty of time for baths! Grab your favorite gentle shampoo and pop them in the tub. Oh, and your dog might like a treat when they get out, I have a feeling. 😉

5. Trail walks and hiking

This might seem like the first idea. But for many of us city dwellers it’s not our first thought. Most of the time we walk through city streets and on suburban sidewalks. Honestly, it can all get a bit bland. So why not mix things up a bit? Pack a quick trail bag and head out to a local dog friendly park. Be sure to maintain your 6 ft and use a leash. Spending just 4 hours per month outside in nature has been shown to significantly decrease stress too!

6. Take your dog to work day (every day!)

Have you ever been at work and thought to yourself, “wow, it would be great if Spot was here me now?” Well rest easy, with quarantine orders also came the “your dog is at home and ready to work” order! Now, if your dog is like Cayley, they’re going to spend most of the day napping and squirrel watching, but that’s not a problem. Just working with your dog is sure to bring out a smile every day!

7. Nap time

I couldn’t resist! And I’m sure I’m not the only one. Let’s be honest, a nap with the dog is a great way to get through that afternoon 3 pm crash. Sure all our dogs should be out getting some sun and running around, but even in all the downtime that comes with quarantine a nap is a great way to relax and chill with your dog!

So there you have it, 7 fun things to do with your dog. Be sure to check what your local rules are regarding quarantine, and as always stay safe. Keep your minimum distances, and cover your mouth if possible. Comments are below, if we’re missing anything or you want to add, feel free!
