What is Wet Wound Healing?

We all want the best possible wound care for our animals! The traditional way of healing is usually by allowing the wound to dry up and scab over. This can be a long and itchy process for your animal. Did you know there is a faster and more effective way to help your pet heal? Wet wound healing leads to better and faster results!

What is Wet Wound Healing?

Wet wound healing is the practice of keeping a wound moist during the healing process.

To keep a wound moist as it heals, you want to apply a wound healing ointment, such as HoneyCure, and cover it with a bandage. Together, the ointment and bandage act as a barrier for the wound against germs, dirt, and debris. If the wound is bandaged during its healing process, it can prevent scab formation. Cells prefer a moist environment because it helps to diffuse nutrients and oxygen more efficiently throughout the body. The moisture helps prevent inflammation, quickens the overall healing process, and encourages better healing!

A wound can heal even without wet wound healing by what is usually referred to as traditional or dry-wound healing. The wound is left open to dry, so the body forms a scab to allow the tissue to regrow and protect it from the outside environment. Unfortunately, this also creates problems between the wound site and the surrounding healthy tissues. Scabs limit blood and nutrients from flowing into the wound, prolonging the healing process, and the nerve endings are overly sensitized which can lead to discomfort and itchiness. Your pet might try to scratch that itch which breaks the barrier and makes the healing process take longer.  Finally, the slow healing skin favors scar formation. In time, the body will heal acute wounds on its own, but this process is slower with a greater chance of scarring, reinjury, or reinfection.

How to Apply HoneyCure for Wet Wound Healing

In wet wound healing, you want to keep your pet’s wound moist and clean throughout the healing process. A great way to do this is to apply a thin layer of HoneyCure to the wound and wrap it with a bandage! Every 6-12 hours, reapply and redress the wound. This easy process makes a world of difference in the whole process of wound healing.

Step 1: Clean

Wash your hands before touching the affected area. Clean the wound with warm water or saline solution. Pat dry. To see the extent of the animal’s injury, you may trim the hair around the wound.

Step 2: Spread

Apply a thin layer of HoneyCure to the wound. Make sure the ointment completely covers the wound and surrounding area. Wash your hands after use. We recommend covering the wound with a bandage as it heals.

Step 3: Repeat

Every 6-12 hours, reapply HoneyCure and redress the wound. Make sure to keep the area moist. Repeat care until the wound is completely healed.

Continue to apply HoneyCure to the wound as it heals. You should be able to see improvement within three days.
