When Should I Consult the Veterinarian?

We all love our pets and want what is best for their health! Some injuries, like cuts and scrapes, we can see. That makes it easy for us to determine the best form of treatment; such as letting our pets heal on their own, with a veterinary wound care ointment like HoneyCure, or bring them to the veterinarian if it’s more serious. However, for other kinds of injuries and illnesses, our pets show us they need help in other ways.

When your pet shows changes in their behavior, eating and drinking habits, and/or breathing, they are showing you something is wrong, and you should consult a professional. Here are some signs and reasons that it is time to take your pet to see the veterinarian.

Serious Wounds
Having to take your pet to the clinic can be stressful. Please seek emergency veterinary care for any serious wounds. It is important to stay calm and take your pet to get care immediately if they show signs of bodily trauma, a wound covers more than 20% of any extremity or any third-degree burns, continuous bleeding after ten minutes, severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhea, difficulty breathing, seizures, abdominal swelling, profound weakness, loss of appetite, or any exposure to poisons or toxins.

Chronic Wounds
A chronic wound is a wound that doesn’t heal completely and can even get worse over time. If your pet has a wound that hasn’t shown signs of improvement within 7 days, we suggest contacting your veterinarian.

It can be hard to determine when it’s time to contact your veterinarian. Always reach out to your clinic if you have any concerns about your pet’s health. They have the knowledge to help your pet with whatever injury or illness they have, so they can give them the care that they need!
